Able bodied parents I'm begging you to teach your kids about disabled people. Not just because they could become disabled themselves one day but also because even if they don't, they have a very real chance of being rude to us if you don't teach them.

Yes, kids just say shit. They have no filter. That doesn't make it any less humiliating when your child sits near me on the bus and incessantly grills me on why I have a stick when I'm not old. Or laughs at us for things our disability causes. It doesn't take away the hurt when they bully a disabled classmate. For a large part these things could be avoided if you just taught your kids to respect us. It's really not that hard.

A yellow image with black text that reads 'ablebodied people can reblog but dont add anything'. To the left of the text is a black silhouette of a wheelchair user and to the right is a black silhouette of a person with a cane.ALT

I've seen discussion around the whitewashed Wyll mod and I think people are scared of having nuanced opinions. You can be "pro" mods and still "anti" bigotry/racism.

Yes, those are "just" mods, optional content you can choose to use or not, to see or not, you can block the creator and decide not to see that type of mods, curate your space and all that, fuck yeah

But being optional doesn't make those mods ok. If you start shrugging at casual racism, POC erasure, gay erasure and other hate-filled mods just because they're "optional", it makes them "ok to exist"

Nobody can stop weirdos from white-washing every POC characters, from turning every queer characters into cis straight characters, from modding literal KIDS into a playable race and potentially into romance scenes (yep, it exist)

This happens in literally every games, and these people will always find their community, make their mods and share them in the shadows 🤷‍♂️ there's sadly way worse shit than mods happening in those type of communities

When these type of mods hit public places tho, like Nexus Mods, I think people have the right- no, people SHOULD voice their anger. Casual racism and bigotry SHOULDN'T be ok, ever

if the modders feel confident enough to share their hate-filled mods, they should be ready for the more than valid backlash they will receive

"Lets people do what they want" work both way

"You can have X and still feel empathy!" True, but the people who DON'T experience empathy don't deserve to get thrown under the bus either

"Having X doesn't mean you can't be smart!" True, but the people you WOULDN'T consider smart don't deserve to get thrown under the bus either

"Having X doesn't mean you're violent!" True, but the people who have been violent don't deserve to get thrown under the bus either

"You can have X and still take care of yourself!" True, but the people who genuinely can't don't deserve to get thrown under the bus either

"You can have X and still act normal!" True, but can you guess what I have to add about the people who CAN'T act normal?

Because if your activism is all about trying to separate your personal self from ableist dehumanization instead of actually challenging said dehumanization, your activism really sucks!

saw someone refer to not knowing how to keep track of your money as "girl math" ......why are we in this weird era of treating women like idiots but repackaging it to sound cute and quirky. We All Need To Stop

meteorherd

at this point i also take issue with those tweets/posts that are of the genre “girls were meant to sit in their bed with treats and do nothing all day” it was fun and #relatable maybe the first few times but it’s really just feeding into this weird mass objectification and dehumanization of women going on all over every social media platform now

Neil Gaiman ( @neil-gaiman ) in Neil Gaiman Answers Mythology Questions on Twitter | Tech Support | WIRED video

[ Image description: a series of screens from a video of Neil Gaiman sitting and answering the question with subtitles. He says “‘Could I ride Minotaur like a horse?’ No, obviously, you could not. You could ride a Minotaur like a man (…) Unless you could find a Minotaur into sort of pony stuff or you probably have to find a furry minotaur, like, not a furry Minotaur, a Minotaur who was actually a furry, would get into a horse costume and get down and you could ride that one.’ End of image description. ]

Little things adults and older people can do to help younger people and children feel included, safe, and respected as an equal individual:

  • Ask before touching the young person - even for hugs. Ask before you take pictures of them, and let them see photographs of them before they are printed or sent to others (even family).
  • Apologize when you are wrong
  • Ask for a young persons thoughts on a subject, then engage with them after they have spoken
  • Demonstrate behaviour you want to see from them (see: apologizing). Say "excuse me," say "thank you," say "please" to them
  • Validate their feelings, even if they don't know how to express them just yet
  • Remember that this is the first time they've been alive, and that you've had way longer to "figure it out"

These are some things I wish other adults remembered when engaging with young folks. We so often forget what childhood felt like and how unfair it all was because we were often awarded freedoms as adults that we never had as children. These kids are equal to adults, and they deserve the same courtesy, respect, kindness, and understanding we give to other adults.
